DIY Pull-Out Cupboard Drawers

Pull out drawers……how I love you!
This project was actually easier than I anticipated. I am really not that good with wood projects, but this came together pretty easily.
*Probably best to use a table saw, chop saw and drill for most of this.
We have OLD, BIG cupboards. The kind where you feel you almost have to climb in them to get something lost in the back.

First thing to do is to take out any shleves, and build a wall in the cupboard where you would want your drawer side to be.
Then you’ll need to drill in some boards to even out the edge that is probably on the outside of the cupboard (otherwards your pull-out drawer won’t be able to be pulled-out). These boards will be what your drawer sliders are fastened to.
Next is to get some DIY drawer sliders at Lowes or Hm Depot. They were by the hardware in my Hm Depot. This picture is me setting the bottom of the drawer in, to make sure it fits. You can see the sliders are attached. I purchased the sliders that can hold up to 100lbs….just for overkill on the whole sturdiness thing.
Next is to build the drawer and attach the sliders to it.

I then decorated the drawers…..of course! Lots of primer, paint and contact paper makes for easy clean-up.
Actually, it’s best to paint everything before you attach the sliders, so that you won’t get paint on the sliders.

Ah…..so much better! Much easier to get to!

See how nice and far they slide out!
I just had to stencil numbers on them.

I’m probably going to have to build these in every house from here on out. They are wonderful!

….if you’re wondering where the baseboard is, that project is next!

  1. Awesome! This pull out drawers are so functional and handy. I need these in EVERY SINGLE base cabinet in my house. Seriously. I removed all the regular shelves back when I painted the kitchen cabinets thinking I’d do the pull out drawers soon afterward. Never got to it! So, for 5 years I’ve had no shelves at all!

Thanks so much for linking up with a project YOU built and for displaying my button!

  2. This is great! Thank you! I’ve been researching how to build our own instead of purchasing them. This is really helpful, thanks again!

  28. I have to say that your comment on my 2011 review made my day. Very difficult year personally, so it was bittersweet to put together. Thank you! Ok . . I NEED these drawers in our too small to call it a pantry cabinet. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I am putting the hubby on this right away. And I love your nursery. You are so talented.

  30. There’s a lot of benefit of being creative. Like this drawers become trendy and more functional in just easy steps.

  31. I am so excited about these drawers. I put an old dresser on the curb this weekend, to wait for it’s ride on Thursday from the trashman……I thought I would take one last look at DIY projects involving drawers, and I am so glad I saw yours!!!! My mothers cabinets are big, deep CAVES…..and she literally could hurt herself trying to bend over and reach very far. I am committing to installing drawers before we go out of town this weekend!!!! (Keeping my fingers crossed that mine turn out half as good as yours!!!!!). Thank u for posting!!!!
