Making Piping out of Yarn

It’s not even the frugality in me that caused me to make piping out of yarn.

Is was more of an availability issue.

This is another project that I made while we were in Denver, working on my sister’s nursery.

Sunday came around and it was time to go home that night, so it was push and shove to get the crib bumper and a few pillows made.

I was on “pillow making duty”, and I am sort of a piping-crazed person when it comes to pillows,… but there was no piping!

The turquoise trim around this pillow was a must, and we really didn’t have enough time to go to a store to buy any. I remembered a lady telling me how she made piping out of yarn to save some money, so I thought I’d give it a try.  I cut a strip of some of our turquoise fabric. The fabric we used in our Color Block Curtains, and laid four rows of yarn inside of it.

Then I wrapped the material around the yarn and sewed it by placing the needle as close as possible to the yarn (it would work much better to use a zipper foot).

Here you can see that it turned out pretty good for using yarn and a strip of fabric!  Next was just making the pillow and sewing the piping in.

You can find more about how to do that on this link to Sew, Mama, Sew!

So now you know, if you have one heck of a tight budget, or if you just don’t have any piping laying around and really need some, you can make it out of yarn!

This is a terrific idea! Piping gives pillows that extra little bit of sophistication that makes them not look quite so homemade. LOVE this idea (and pined it for you!)

  2. Mel says:

Cool idea, I love those spare of the moment things that end up being awesome! I have a yarn obsession

What a great idea, Katie! There have been several times that I wanted to do a project with piping but didn’t want to run out to JoAnn’s. I pinned this so I could remember this trick (it’s probably so much cheaper, too).

    Thanks for sharing!

What a great idea!! I love the look of piping, but don’t have it on hand very often. Yarn on the other hand I have on hand ALL THE TIME. :) I’m pinning this for later use. Thanks so much for sharing with us at Link It Up Thursday.

I love this! You’re so resourceful :) I’ve never tried piping because I’m not the greatest sewer and I’m scared of it, but I really want to one day. It turned out great and you would never know there was yarn in there! I would love if you came by and shared this at my Throwback Thursday party. I’d love to have you :) I hope to see you there and thanks for sharing! http://www.hubbymademe.com/throwback-thursday-no-9/

Love this idea! I’m a beginning sewer, so I don’t like investing a lot of money in supplies because I’m likely to screw the project up anyway, but this is right up my alley. Totally unintimidating and practical.
