Get Ready for Spring Series: Make a Table Runner out of Placemats

Entry 2.5

I’m going to be starting on a Decorating for Spring series.

Spring decorating is great because of all the outdoor elements you can use and because you can paint things white and they seem to “work”.

Of course, I’ll be trying to “spring-i-fy” my space for next to nothing, so hopefully you’ll find the ideas interesting at the least.

For my entryway vignette, I tried to use things I already had, by painting them, using fabric, or just using them in a different way.

We’ll start at the beginning, where I made a table runner out of some place mats that I found on fall clearance at Walmart a couple years back.

Here are the placemats.

You can either sew them together….

…or just place something with weight on top of where they meet.

…and you have an interesting and inexpensive table runner!

Looks great in this space. I love the texture and the stripes.

Entry 2

Have you ever used placemats as anything other than placemats?

Awesome, I could have sworn that this was a real thing! The seam in completely invisible…. and I also found myself wondering why those beautiful bamboo mats don’t come in more shapes and sizes…

  3. Nana Dianad says:

I love your runner. I especially like how it picks up the greens of the items you have on top of it- GREAT job- xo Diana

  4. Mimi says:

Looks fabulous Katie. I love the vignette you created. That is a great idea, bring on the spring!

    • Katie says:

Well, I’m not sure why I think it’s time for spring decorating. Maybe because I only like to decorate seasonally, and I’m really tired of the winter stuff. lol It is only Feb though, I guess :)

  5. LindaDiane says:

Ok, now I’m embarrassed that I never thought of this, so simple!

  6. Ann says:

This is brilliant…well done! Years ago I made some little purses from place mats. My daughter was at the age where she wanted a purse for every outfit and we had great fun shopping for the place mats. The runner makes much more sense though!

    • Katie says:

Thanks Ann. Good idea with the purses! I’d never thought of that. I’ve seen people make pillows out of dollar store placemats too. I’m going to have to keep my eyes out of the clearance ones!

  16. That’s a great tip! It seems there are far more choices in placemats than in table runners, so you don’t have to limit yourself now :)

Thanks so much for linking up at the party,

    • Katie says:

Totally Christina! I saw someone use some Dollar Store placemats to make a Roman shade yesterday! I’m going to have to start thinking of more ideas of how to use them!
