DIY Closet Floor Design

I have a new toy. I’ve been wanting one of these forever! It’s a Silhouette!

I used this Silhouette to do the first “fun” project in my new fixer! I’m going to show it to you, as well as share a promotional discount and some fantastic deals that are happening right now at the Silhouette company!

A Silhouette is an electronic cutting machine that connects to your computer and allows you to cut fonts, picture icons, vinyl decals, scrapbooking paper crafts, custom magnet sheets, custom tattoo paper, fabric and so much more!

I have the Silhouette Cameo, and there is another Silhouette option called the Portrait. Both are wonderful machines that leave you so many options!

Since my projects are usually house renovation/decorating related, my first project was to re-vamp the boy’s closet floor.

This project was actually pretty quick. It only took me an evening.

This was what I started with.

When I refinished the floors, this was the last area I had to sand and when I got to it, I thought…no way! I’ll just paint it!

So….

I sanded it with 80 grit sandpaper, cleaned it up, primed it with Kilz and painted it white with porch and floor enamel.

Then I used some 3’’ sandpaper to set against the boarder and measure where to start the inside line.

Missing ruler?  …no problem!

Then I used three rows of painters tape in order to make a line to paint. I pulled off the middle tape strip and painted away.

I did something similar to make an inner pin-stripe too (not shown in pic below)

With the boarder being finished, I used my Silhouette to make this detailed world map. I found the midpoint of the map and the midpoint of the closet and quickly stuck the vinyl map down. It was EASY and the detail of the map is amazing!

See how intricate it is!

Much improved! Now I can’t wait to paint the walls and trim and add some fun hooks!

I could really update this vinyl map decal with the new Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition. This updated software allows you to use the vast amount of pictures and options from the original software, but gives you some fun new updates!

I would love to add some cool lines through the map.

I also love this pencil sketch option.

  1. That is the funnest thing I have ever seen! I used to work at a sign shop, but our machine was huge compared to this desk one. If I had one of those, I would spitting out designs like there’s no tomorrow! Since I Iive in Canada, I can’t do the contest (At least the Canadian machines are on sale I see on their website…)

  2. Very fun! That turned out great.

  3. Katie, you have me so inspired! I have a space that I’ve been wanting to do something to and a DIY like this would be perfect. I’m featuring your closet floor design at my Twirl & Take a bow Party on Tuesday.
    Have a great week.
