My favorite project so far this summer is my HUGE and (mostly) Free Flower Box Wall Art!

I’m so happy with how this (once junk) turned out!

How does something this big and colorful get made for free you ask?

Well, you start off with anything you can find for free that will fit the space you need it for. Craigslist is full of free things everyday! This was an old, free gate. You could use crib sides, cupboard doors, real doors, a chair seat, make some pallet art. You name it! The possibilities are endless!

(This was the gate I started with. It is HUGE! )

Once you have your free art, paint it or add some words, a saying, verse or picture.

Next, hang it up with some screws, hooks or you could even make it a stand. I hung this gate on three large screws placed in the side of our garage (Our garage has wood siding).

Next, get some free wood off Craigslist or maybe you have some lying around.

I made a flower boxes out of free Craigslist wood and lined it with plastic. Lastly, I drilled some holes in the bottom for drainage. If I were to do it again, I would line the garden box with landscaping fabric.

I used This Old House’s flower box tutorial.

(I skipped the glue and used free wood instead of MDO…call me a rule breaker.)

The next step is to use some L-brackets to set your flower box on.

I used extra large L-brackets. You can find them at most hardware stores. You don’t want them to show, but you need them long enough to give good support.

Remember, the gate is not sitting on the brackets. It’s hung on the screws.

Lastly, fill your flower box with beautiful flowers!

No matter what junk you started with. With some paint and flowers, it will look great!

  3. Totally cool idea, Katie! A flowerbox on it’s own on a big wall would seem lost but with the funky old backdrop it becomes a whole amazing piece of art. So creative!! Pinning and sharing:)

  4. WOW … that bright orange gate really makes a delightful statement. LOVE it !
