An Imperfect Vintage Vanity Makeover….for the Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest!

Vintage Vanity Glam Makeover for the Girl's Room

Are you guys up for another Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest?

untitled

Holly and I LOVE a good contest! Especially one where they send you amazing  paint to use!

January’s theme was “A Fresh Start”,

and when we learned that General Finishes was the sponsor for the January Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest,

we quickly signed up!

Months ago, I picked out two vanities on Craigslist and asked all of our IG followers  to help me choose which one to makeover for the girl’s room.

This vanity won out! It was more streamlined, and simpler, yet very feminine and dainty….in my opinion.

The before….

Now really this picture makes this vanity look better than it really was.

It took vanity surgery to get this thing in better shape. Lots of glue, clamps and wood filler were used!

There was so much veneer coming off I wasn’t sure if I should just strip it all off or glue it all down!

Vanity in progress

This is the vanity while in surgery!

….and keep in mind I am not good with wood!

I am pretty much willing to tackle any DIY, but when I work with wood, I usually feel pretty lost.

Which brings me to the main point of this post.

It doesn’t need to be perfect to be beautiful!

Vintage Vanity Glam Makeover Girl's Room

Sometimes, you just need to take a risk!

You just need to give it a good try and realize that if you can make it better and if it will bring you joy,

then that’s enough!

Mirror Vanity Makeover

You see there are soooo many parts of this vanity that aren’t “ok”!

I even let parts of the veneer stay on inner sides that I didn’t feel like scraping off!

Vainty Makeover Shabby Chic

There are parts of the veneer that are still warped and bubbling here and there!

Vanity Makeover

There may even be some areas that need a little more wood filler!

…but with some fluff, some beautiful hardware, and some good paint,

you can make something (that was honest ready for the dump), into a beautiful and functional piece!

Hardware for Vanity Makeover

The real point is that the girls love it…and they do!

Eva (5) was saying, “Mom, it’s beautiful! When can we put our make-up in it?!”

….keep in mind, she doesn’t have makeup yet. Maybe she means chapstick?

  1. Marvelous makeover Katie, those junky pieces that need lots of extra love are always the most rewarding to rehab to me! This vanity has beautiful lines and so worthy for all your work. Some pieces just look all the more fab with imperfections, case in point! So glad you were able to save this beauty!

  2. So pretty! These types of vanities are some of my favorite things to work and restore, even if done imperfectly. It’s just lovely and your knob choice? Perfection. 🙂

  3. I love comparing the before and after pics. What a difference! Great job on the makeover.

  4. It is so beautiful and dainty! I would have loved this as a little girl! And that vanity sounds a lot like me in the mornings. Kind of blah with some lumps here and there, but add some hardware and some paint and you’re good to go. 😉

  5. What a PERFECTLY sweet set for a little girl. I’m in love. The vanity…and the stool with the fluffly top…PERFECT!

  6. ChiquitaHannah says:

    It turned out amazing!

  7. What a beautiful piece! Maybe your daughter was referring to the collective “we” – and wants to share her vanity with your makeup!
    You did a great job.

  8. If I were you, I would stop saying you’re not good with wood – this looks great! That stool you added is perfection, and really emphasizes the vintage feel of the vanity. Great, great work!

    • Thanks Dee! I wish I were better with wood! You should see the desk I’m using right now…..quite wobbly! lol I know enough to make things functional though!

  9. I love it, it is so perect and great redo.

  10. What a perfect update for a little girl’s vanity. So fresh and shabbilicious! ;o)

  11. Wow, this turned out beautiful. I really appreciate the fact that you opted for a softer more neutral color than a bold color. It looks great and has a romance feel to it.

    • Thanks Jessica! I think bolder colors are so fun, but I gravitate towards the neutrals for my own home. I didn’t even realize what a feminine piece it was until I added the white paint!

  12. It’s just beautiful, and the shape of the mirror is to die for!!! I’m about 3/4 of the way done with my bedroom vanity. I still have to distress and wax. I’m anxious to finish it!

  13. That is so darling! What a unique piece, one that you don’t find to often. You did an amazing job on it. I bet it will be well loved.
    Thanks for sharing.
    Visiting from Wow us Wednesday

  14. I am drooling over your vanity! It is stunning! You are my kind of girls for sure! The more broken the piece, the better it seems to turn out in the end! Well done for sure! I hope you have a great weekend! If you are interested in joining one more party each week I would be so happy to host you over at Making Broken Beautiful. It runs every Thursday thru Sunday and is a home decor and furniture party. Have a great day!
    Smiles!
