DIY Painted Outdoor Rug

After spending way too much time looking for a I rug that I liked (not even one out of my price range), I decided to take matters into my own hands and create something I would like…and for a fraction of the cost.

I started by purchasing a plain dark grey outdoor rug (through Amazon, but from The Home Depot) for about $32 bucks.

It’s 6ftx8ft, so it’s a good size!

I also purchased 3 inch wide painters tape and Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint (in Satin white).

I began measuring and taping off the rug so that I could paint.

Note: you really need to tape down all sides of the newspaper so that no spray paint can get under it.

Lesson Learned: I didn’t seal off every single crack and a little paint got underneath the paper and ended up lightly misting some of the rug I didn’t want painted.

I thought for sure the paint would get under the painters tape, but it did a good job. I do recommend getting a quality brand of tape, the cheap stuff doesn’t stick well enough.

I sprayed a couple coats of paint over the rug, I used 3 cans of spray paint for the entire project.

It was so fun to pull the tape off this rug and see the dramatic changes!

I really love how the rug turned out, despite the bit of paint that got under the newspaper.

I’d definitely do this project again, it was fun, easy, affordable, and I got to be creative by personalizing the rug exactly how I wanted it to be.

UPDATE: A year later…so, I’ve had this rug for a year now. It’s been rained on (A LOT, I live in Seattle), it’s had chairs on it, gotten dirt on it (I have 2 young boys), etc. etc. etc. And it’s held up GREAT! And it’s easy to sweep off and vacuum. For the heavy part of winter I rolled it up and put it in the garage, otherwise it’s been out in the elements. I was pleasantly surprised how great it looked when I pulled it out of the garage. Another thing I like about this particular outdoor rug is that it’s really lightweight, so I can easily move it myself, but it doesn’t slide around when it’s on the ground. Overall, I still really enjoy it!
